WASHINGTON, D.C., October 21, 2010 -- William S. Littlejohn, senior vice president of Sharp HealthCare Foundation in San Diego, Calif., has been elected to a one-year term as secretary-treasurer of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP).  AHP represents directors of philanthropic programs for not-for-profit hospitals, clinics, health care systems and related facilities throughout North America (www.ahp.org).

Sharp HealthCare Foundation supports the charitable missions of Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, Sharp Vista Pacifica Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Sharp Rees-Stealy.

“With more than two decades of experience successfully managing philanthropic programs, Bill Littlejohn is a welcome addition to the AHP leadership team,” said William C. McGinly, Ph.D., president and CEO of AHP.

Littlejohn joined Sharp HealthCare in 2002 as senior vice president and chief executive officer of Sharp HealthCare Foundation.  He oversees the entire philanthropic program for the foundation, which received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2007.

A member of AHP for 17 years, he served on the association’s board of directors as the AHP Pacific regional director for the past two years.  He is a member of AHP’s regional cabinet and has served on the faculty for regional and international conferences.

Littlejohn, who has spoken and written extensively on fundraising, earned first place in a professional journal competition for his spring 2006 cover article for the AHP Journal on “Creating a Culture of Philanthropy: Best Practices at Sharp.”

During 10 years of providing full-time fundraising counsel leading up to the Sharp assignment, Littlejohn supervised or directed more than 40 projects including capital and endowment campaigns, campaign planning and feasibility studies, development audits and major gift programs.
He is a charter advisor to The Advisory Board Company’s Philanthropy Leadership Council and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics.

The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, established in 1967, is a not-for-profit organization whose more than 4,700 members direct philanthropic programs in 2,000 of North America’s nonprofit health care providers.

Hospitals, health care systems and related facilities for which AHP members raise charitable funds provide essential, comprehensive medical services to their communities, as well as wellness programs, mobile health vans, mammography screenings, hearing and eye exams, and other community-based health care services.  AHP members include fundraising professionals, development staff, public relations professionals, trustees, marketing specialists, administrators and executives interested in health care fundraising.  To learn more, visit www.ahp.org.
